What Is An Engine Air Filter?

The engine on a gas-burning Volkswagen vehicle mixes air with the fuel to create a combustible mixture. Air gets into the engine through the intake. In the intake, an air filter is included to prevent road debris like leaves, litter, dirt, and dust from getting into the engine.

Over time, the material collected by the air filter will build up and can clog the filter, preventing sufficient airflow to the intake and choking the engine. That’s why the air filter needs to be regularly replaced.

How Often Should My Engine Air Filter Be Replaced?

Under normal driving conditions, the engine air filter in your vehicle should be good for up to 30,000 miles before it should be replaced. However, if your vehicle experiences more severe driving conditions — such as frequent stop-and-go traffic, smoggy conditions, off-road driving and severe weather — the air filter may need to be replaced more frequently, as often as every 15,000 to 10,000 miles. What Are the Signs of a Clogged Engine Air Filter?

When the engine air filter is badly clogged, the engine will be starved for sufficient air supply. You may be able to detect a reduction in the performance and efficiency of the engine. If you notice poor fuel economy or a decrease in horsepower, a replacement air filter may be a fast, easy fix. This problem can also cause a Check Engine Light to illuminate on your vehicle’s dashboard.
